University of Tennessee Police Department

Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Tennessee Police Department is to promote an atmosphere that is free from fear for personal safety, property loss, or accident, and which enhances the overall operation of The University. Through continuous protection and service, the Police Department contributes to the maintenance of a free, orderly and safe environment in which students, faculty, staff, and guests may pursue their various activities. The primary functions of the Police Department are protection, service and education.

The Police Department recognizes the rather unique nature of the university community, and consequently, attempts to develop and implement programs and services to meet the needs of this special community. The Police Department endeavors to supplement and enhance the educational and social development of the individual members of the University community.

To accomplish the established mission, it is essential that the Police Department strive for excellence in operations and service which will result in the confidence, respect, support, and cooperation of the University community. The Police Department must develop an overall community awareness of the nature, purpose and scope of police operations and exhibit professional attitudes and skills among all members of the Police Department, whereby each member will find personal satisfaction and fulfillment in the achievement of Police Department objectives.



The University of Tennessee Police Department shall:

Enforce in a reasonable and prudent manner all Federal, State and local laws, and ordinances; and University regulations relating to the control of crime and the regulation of conduct.

Protect life and property from criminal attack.

Take all necessary actions to assure the community of an orderly, free and safe environment.

Maintain a relationship with the community which reflects a friendly atmosphere of mutual respect and assistance.

Treat all persons equally with dignity, respect and fairness, regardless of race, creed or social status.

Provide advice, assistance and educational programs to promote security and deter crime for all segments of the community.

Establish and maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with University departments; local, State and Federal authorities; and the general public.

Provide assistance to members of the community whenever indicated or requested.

Law Enforcement Code of Ethics:

Sworn personnel shall adopt the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics as a guide in the everyday ethical performance of his/her duties.
