How to use the article title index .

1. Order of entry

Alphabetic order of title is used for this index. When "the" or "a/an" is the first word of the title, the word following it is treated as the first word. Title of work. Type of work. Author's name (first/last). Volume number, issue number, date, and page numbers; e.g.:

Miranda v. Arizona: Twenty Years Have Not Improved It. (C).  James J. Kilpatrick. 5(2), Summer/Fall 1986. pp. 2, 59-60.

Works are classified into the following types, as indicated:

A = Article
B = Bibliographical Essay
C = Commentary
D = Discussion
E = Exchange
R = Review Essay, Book Review
S = Symposium, Ethics In Context

2. One entry per work, regardless of the number of authors. e.g.:

The Case Against Using Biological Indicators in Judicial Decision Making and Rejoinder to Herrnstein. (E).  Robert L. Bonn, & Alexander B. Smith. 7(1), Winter/Spring 1988. pp. 3-10; 15-17.

3. When a principal work is followed by a rejoinder in the same issue, the rejoinder is listed together with the principal work. The principal work and the rejoinder are separated with the word "and", and the page numbers of the two are separated with ";"; e.g.:

The Case Against Using Biological Indicators in Judicial Decision Making and Rejoinder to Herrnstein. (E).  Robert L. Bonn, & Alexander B. Smith. 7(1), Winter/Spring 1988. pp. 3-10; 15-17.

4. Review essays and book reviews: The book reviewed is listed after type indicator, in italics, with author's name (first/last) first, followed by title of book; e.g.:

A Case for Limited Paternalism. (R),  John Kleinig, Paternalism.  Dan W. Brock. 4(2), Summer/Fall 1985. pp. 79-88.

5. Symposium, Ethics In Context, Exchange: When each participant's contribution, with or without a title, is an integral part of the Symposium, etc., then the title of the work is treated as one entry, and the page numbers listed are for the whole work; e.g.:

Paying a Murderer for Evidence. (S). Discussants: Helman R. Brook, Robert J. Comiskey, Ronald Munson, & Kai Nielsen. 2(2), Summer/Fall 1983. pp. 47-55.

When each participant's contribution stands on its own, it is treated as one entry, followed by type indicator and the title of the whole work. The page numbers given cover only the listed title; e.g.:

Good Faith Mistakes and the Exclusionary Rule. (S), The Exclusionary Rule.  Frank G. Carrington. 1(2), Summer/Fall 1982. pp. 35-40.

1. Single author

Author's last name, first name, middle initial. Date of issue. Title of author's work. Type of work. Volume number, issue number, page.

Works are classified into the following types, as indicated:

A = Article
B = Bibliographical Essay
C = Commentary
D = Discussion
E = Exchange
R = Review Essay, Book Review
S = Symposium, Ethics In Context

2. Multiple authors

Such works are indexed under the last name of each author. Coauthors are listed first name first; e.g.;

Bonn, Robert L., & Alexander B. Smith (Winter/Spring 1988). The Case Against Using Biological Indicators in Judicial Decision Making and Rejoinder to Herrnstein. (E), 7(1), pp. 3-10; 15-17.

3. Principal work followed by rejoinder

In such cases, the rejoinder is listed together with the principal work, and is separated from the principal work with the word "and." Page numbers for the principal work and the rejoinder are separated by ";"; e.g.:

Bonn, Robert L., & Alexander B. Smith (Winter/Spring 1988). The Case Against Using Biological Indicators in Judicial Decision Making and Rejoinder to Herrnstein. (E), 7(1), pp. 3-10; 15-17.

4. Review essays

The book(s) being reviewed is listed after type indicator, in italics, with author's name (first, last) first, followed by title of book. e.g.:

5. Symposium, Ethics In Context, Exchange

cipant's contribution, with or without a title, is an integral part of the symposium, etc., the participant is indexed as a discussant. Only the title of the Symposium etc. is listed. The page numbers given are that for the whole work. e.g.:

Brook, Helman R. (Summer/Fall 1983). Discussant. (S), Paying a Murderer for Evidence. 2(2), pp. 47-55.

When each participant's contribution stands on its own, its title is listed, followed by type indicator and the title of the work. The page numbers given cover only the contribution of the listed author. e.g.:

Carrington, Frank G. (Summer/Fall 1982). Good Faith Mistakes and the Exclusionary Rule. (S), The Exclusionary Rule. 1(2), pp. 35-40.
