Connecting From Home
Almost all of the electronic resources available to John Jay students, faculty and staff in the Lloyd Sealy Library,
including the licensed resources to which we have paid subscriptions, can also be accessed remotely, from home or
office. You will need:
 |
Use the John Jay Library Webpages John Jay students, faculty and staff are able to access licensed electronic
resources from off-campus through the John Jay Library proxy server. The proxy server only works if the licensed
resources are accessed via links on the Library web pages. You cannot go directly to the website of the remote
resource.
Note: if you access CUNY+ through the Sealy Library's CUNY+ page you will be able to link to the
John Jay electronic books and journals listed in the catalog.

John Jay email account The license agreements for our electronic resources require that we limit remote access to John
Jay students, faculty and staff. When you connect to the resources through the Sealy Library web pages, you will be
asked for your username and password. This is your John Jay email username and password.
All John Jay students, faculty and staff are entitled to a John Jay email account.
Current students are automatically assigned email accounts. New Faculty will need to request
an email account by calling the DoIT Help Desk at 212-237-8200. For additional details check the
Frequently Asked Questions for Email.
Students and faculty who are having problems with their John Jay email account, should call the DoIT Help Desk at
212-237-8200, 8AM - 12:00 midnight everyday except Holidays, or send email to helpdesk@jjay.cuny.edu.
Students in need of assistance learning how to use email should go to theInformation Technology Support Services,

Access to the Internet Most people at home have access to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such
as AOL, Earthlink, Worldnet, Roadrunner, etc. either by dialing up using a modem and their telephone line, or by using a
high-speed connection like a cable modem or DSL.
Many John Jay students are able to access the Internet from their offices at work through a local area network.
Unfortunately, some firewalls on office networks may block the ports used by the Library proxy server to provide access
to licensed resources.
|
 |
Web browsers CUNY+ and the licensed electronic resources should work well with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and
above, Netscape Navigator version 6.2 and above, and Mozilla Firefox. All of these may be downloaded for free. Earlier
versions may have problems.
The AOL web browser does not work well with some of our licensed electronic resources. If you are using AOL as your ISP,
connect to the Internet with AOL, then minimize the AOL browser and start up either Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Adobe Acrobat Reader Many journal articles, including those on Electronic Reserve, are in PDF format and must be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Acrobat
Reader can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.

Library Barcode Your library barcode number is the barcode number that you receive on the back of your ID card at the
Sealy Library Circulation Desk. You will need this number to take advantage of the new features of CUNY+, such as the
ability to see your account, to renew books online, and to set up an alert to be notified when new books in your area of
interest are available.
You can also use your library barcode to access those electronic resources that were centrally purchased by CUNY
libraries, if you do not have a John Jay email account or it does not seem to be working.
Use your library barcode when you see the link that says "Alternate access via library barcode" on the Electronic
Information Resources page. You can also use your library barcode to access CUNY centrally-purchased resources via the
CUNY Libraries page.
John Jay students, faculty, and staff have access to many more resources than those centrally funded through CUNY. Some
of these were purchased with Student Technology Fee funds. To access these, you MUST use the John Jay Library website
and your John Jay email account.
