FAQs - Library Information

  • How do I get to the library?

    • The Library is located at 899 Tenth Avenue, New York, NY (between 58th & 59th Streets). The library entrance is on the lower level, proceed down and behind the escalators for the entrance to the library. Travel directions to John Jay College .

  • Is there a library floor plan available?

    • Maps are available to find photocopiers, stack call numbers, and specific rooms throughout the library's upper floor and lower floor.

  • Who can borrow books?

    • Students, staff and faculty from any College in the City University of New York with a current, validated ID card may borrow books from the Sealy Library. In addition, sworn members of the New York City Police Department with badges and current members of the John Jay College Alumni Association can borrow.

    • Books circulate for three weeks. John Jay faculty may keep John Jay books for 8 weeks.

    • Books can be renewed two times via the My Account function in CUNY+, with the same length of loan period, providing there is no hold on the book by another patron. For help, see instructions for book renewal. Books can also be renewed by bringing them to the library circulation desk.

    • Your college ID acts as your library card. Your home campus library will affix a patron barcode to the back of your ID card.

    • A maximum of ten books may be borrowed per day by students and staff..

  • Can I borrow library materials from other CUNY libraries?

    • Students, staff and faculty of John Jay College can borrow library materials from any library in CUNY. Books can be returned at any CUNY library provided they are not long overdue.

  • Can I place a hold on a book?

    • Yes, you must see the library circulation desk staff with the book title and the book's call number to request a hold.
  • What are the overdue fines?

    • Overdue fines are 10 cents per calendar day, per book, for all patrons. There is a 2 day grace period (10 days for John Jay faculty). For example: no fines are charged for books up to two days overdue; on the third day the fine is 30 cents. The maximum overdue fine is the replacement cost of the book (as listed in Books in Print). Borrowing privileges are suspended when books become more than 7 days overdue or when overdue fines for returned books exceed $5.00.

  • Can I receive overdue notices via email?

    • Yes, stop by the circulation desk and provide your email address to the staff.

  • How much does a lost book cost?

    • Lost books will be charged the replacement cost of the book as listed in Books in Print plus a $10 processing fee.

  • Do I have to return my books to John Jay College?

    • No. Under a CUNY-wide courtesy book return agreement, books borrowed from one CUNY library may be returned at any other CUNY library. However, If a book is long overdue, you must return it to the owning campus.

  • How can I check on the books I have out?

    • Users can view their library accounts in CUNY+, the online library catalog. Click on My Account on the blue task bar at top of screen. Logon with your library barcode number. Click on the Loans button to see records of books you currently have charged out.

  • How do I renew a book?

    • Books can be renewed by accessing the My Account function in the CUNY+, online library catalog. For help, see the instructions for book renewal on CUNY+. Books can also be renewed by bringing them to the library circulation desk.

  • How do I clear my library record?

    • Your library record will be blocked for overdue books or overdue fines totaling more than $5.00. Come to the library circulation desk to return overdue items, pay overdue fines, pay for lost books. Several times per year, the registrar's SIMS system is updated with library blocks. Once your account is clear, library registration blocks will be removed from SIMS. For questions about your circulation account, call (212) 237-8225 or email the library staff.

  • Can I use the Sealy Library if I am not affiliated with CUNY?

    • Researchers not associated with the City University of New York may make arrangements for on-site use of the collection by contacting the Reference Desk at (212) 237-8247 or by e-mail at libref@jjay.cuny.edu.


  • Where can I make a photocopy? Can I make copies from microfilm/microfiche?

    • The Library has photocopiers available in the back of reserve room on the lower level and multiple locations on the second floor. Copies cost ten cents per copy and machines accept coins, dollar bills and copy cards. Copies can be made from microfilm and microfiche and also cost ten cents each. Three of the film/fiche machines accept dime coins and three accept copy cards.

  • How can I get help with my research or learn to use the Library?

    • Librarians are available at the Reference Desk during Library hours for in person or telephone consultation (212) 237-8247. Email reference is also available at libref@jjay.cuny.edu

    • In addition, the Library has regularly scheduled 30 minute mini classes on a variety of topics.

    • See the Help with Research section of the Library home page for library handouts, classes, tutorials, & other instructional material. For in depth research assistance, an appointment can be made with a Reference Librarian.

  • How can I get a job in the Library?

    • The Library employs students in two ways:

      • Work Study - Federal program which pays students to perform jobs on campus if they can demonstrate financial need. See the Student Financial Aid Office for more information about eligibility for work study or call (212) 237-8151 for more information.

        If you have work study hours and wish to work in the library, ask to see Prof. Maria Kiriakova at the library circulation desk for an interview. The library has a limited number of places available for work study students so inquire at the beginning of the semester.

      • Student Aide/College Assistant - periodically the library has a small number of openings for work in the circulation department. These jobs entail shelving library materials and working at the circulation and reserve room desks. Contact Prof. Nancy Egan to inquire about job availability.
