FAQs - Computers in the Library

  • What computers are available in the library?

    • The Lloyd Sealy Library currently has over one hundred computers available in the library for student, faculty and staff use. Some are set aside for special uses. Most of the computers are located on the upper level of the library and are dedicated to researching library databases and the Internet. The computers in the Reserve Room on the lower level have word processing and other software for general use by students.

    • An increasing number of our library resources are now purchased in electronic form, so computers are critical for accessing these resources. Funds from the Student Technology Fee have made the purchase of library computers and databases possible.

  • Which computers are available for searching the Web?

    • Except for the computers dedicated to searching fulltext library databases, CUNY+, or EReserve, all the computers are able to search the Web.

  • Do I have to sign-up to use a computer?

    • You should sign up at the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor for the computers on the upper level that access the Web. Usage is limited to one hour. A sign-up sheet is kept by the Lab Assistant in the Reserve Room for the computers with word processing software.

  • Where can I type a paper in the library? Where can I print a word processing file?

    • A small computer lab is now located in the Reserve Reading Room of the Library (lower level). The Student Technology Fee has funded 20 Dell computers with the full Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access. and PowerPoint) and SPSS. Access to the World Wide Web is also available. Printing is available using a John Jay student email account.

The computers are available for all hours the Library is open.

Lab assistants can provide help at the following times:
      Monday-Thursday 8:30 am - 10 pm
      Friday noon - 5 pm
      Saturday 11:30 am - 6 pm
      Sunday 12 noon - 5 pm
    • Word processing is also available in the Instructional Technology Support Services Laboratories room 1404 North Hall. In addition, the Law and Police Science Lab (room 413T) may be available for word processing if a class is not in session. See Labs Available for JJC Students on Campus for a complete list of computing facilities.

  • How can I print?

    • Printers are available in the Reference Area on the 2nd floor and the Reserve Room on the 1st floor. Current John Jay students may use the printers by submitting their John Jay email id and password. Each current student is given a $15 credit at the beginning of the semester to use for printing. Costs are 5-cents/per page for black/white and 10- cents /per page for color.

    • Additional printers that require a copy card are available in the Reference Area for library users that cannot use a John Jay email account. Printing with these computers costs ten cents per page and is done with a copy card. Copy cards can be purchased at dispensers on the upper (near the Reference Law section) and lower (back of Reserve Room) levels. You need a one dollar bill to purchase a card. You will receive the card with eighty cents (8 copies) worth of copies (the card costs twenty cents). Cards are reuseable, money can be added to them at the dispensers.

    • To print from library databases use the print function of your Web browser. For fulltext articles that are in PDF format, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your computer to view them. Acrobat Reader is available to download for free. When you view a PDF document, the Acrobat toolbar will appear at the top of your document. To print a PDF file, you must use the print icon in the Acrobat toolbar!!

  • Is wireless access available in the library ?

  • Can I use a laptop computer in the Library?

    • If your laptop has wireless capability, check these instructions on setting up access to the wireless network.

    • If you do not have wireless, then you can use one of the ports in the library for “plug in” access to the Internet. Your laptop must have a network interface card (NIC) to connect. All connections are labeled and have instructions for use. Ask at the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor for a cable to use or for help in finding the locations listed below:

      • 3 connections at the tables adjacent to the Special Collections Section on the 2nd floor
      • 4 by the carrels at the rear of the Reference Section
      • 4 at the built-in desks adjacent to the Periodicals Section on the 2nd floor
      • 4 at the built-in desks adjacent to the book stacks for call numbers D – G

  • Can I scan an image in the Library?

  • Are there any computers specifically for faculty use?

    • Yes, two computer workstations are reserved for used by faculty and their research assistants. You will need to ask at the Reference Desk for access to these computers.

  • Are there any computers available with features for users with special needs?

    • One special computer workstation is available on the 2nd Floor of the library near the Reference Desk The workstation is equipped with an adjustable height table; JAWS screen reading software; ZOOM TEXT screen reading and enlarging; and DRAGON NATURALLY SPEAKING speech and imaging software.

    • Ask at the Reference Desk for access to these software products. Also, ask for the track ball and/or headphones with a microphone if they would be of help.

  • What computing facilities are available in the Library Electronic Classroom?

    • The Library Electronic Classroom is used primarily as a teaching classroom. The classroom is equipped with 24 computer workstations, an overhead projector, a projection screen and an E – Podium equipped with a computer and DVD/video player. Special software (LanSchool) can be used to control the workstations from the E-Podium.

    • The classroom is not open for general public use. Faculty may arrange for a classroom session with one of the library faculty presenting formal library instruction. Or faculty may reserve the classroom for use on their own when they want to instruct their class about library electronic resources or specific statistical software. Contact Prof. Marvie Brooks at ext. 8261 or email mbrooks@jjay.cuny.edu to schedule use of the classroom.
