Scope and Coverage

Starting in 1986 and updated monthly, the database provides full-text coverage of more than 200 newspapers and periodicals published by the ethnic, minority and native press. Coverage includes editorials, interviews, obituaries and book and theatre reviews in English and Spanish.

Searching

The database can be searched in two ways:
  • typing in a keyword or phrase
  • clicking an option listed under More search criteria and then selecting one of the listed terms
A keyword search is the easiest. Type in the most distinctive word(s) in the top search box labeled Words in Articles.Omit words such as a, an, at, by, in, of, to, with. In the example below: the system searches tribal fishing rights as a phrase: articles retrieved will have those three words in the exact order..

Click Submit Search to view the Summary Results display which lists the title of the article, the name of the publication, the date and type of article.

From the Summary screen, you can 1) sort by title and date and 2) mark to print or export (save) to a disk. Click the box(es) on the left of the article(s) and follow prompts. To view the full text, click on the underlined title.

When searching Words in Article, or Words in Title, you may combine words using the connectors and, or, not

Use and to find articles that must contain both terms, e.g., tribal and fishing rights

Use and to narrow a search.

Use the or connector to retrieve articles that have one or another term. Use or to combine synonyms or like concepts to increase your retrieval, i.e.,
(tribal or indian) and fishing rights

As in the last example, when using or, combine synonyms or like concepts within parenthesis, then use and to connect additional keywords.

Use not to exclude a particular term, but not another, for example:
(tribal or indian) and fishing rights not canada

The above search finds articles that discuss tribal or Indian fishing rights, but excludes any reference to Canada or Canadian tribes as well as articles that discuss both Canadian and American tribes and fishing rights.
Use not to narrow a search, but be aware that you may be excluding articles that could be relevant.

A field search allows you to search specific bibliographic elements separately. The ten searchable fields in Ethnic NewsWatch are listed under More search criteria on the first screen.

To search, click the field and when the window appears, select one or more terms. For multiple selections, hold down the ctrl key and click every desired selection. Click OK when finished.

If your term is not available, use either Words in Article or Words in Title search.

To begin a new search, click Clear All.

Click Exit to end session.
