Using Your Wireless Computer in the John Jay Library

In order to use the John Jay wireless network, you will need a computer with a wireless 801.11b or 801.11g adapter (these are the most common types).

All registered and paid students are issued an email account.  Check your eSIMS account for your email username.  Your default password (until you change it) is jj followed by the last four digits of your social security number. Faculty and staff members can obtain a John Jay email account through the DoIT Help Desk at x8200.

Follow these steps to log on to the wireless network:

1. Once your portable computer is powered up in the Library it will automatically detect the John Jay College wireless network.

If this is the first time you are connecting to the wireless network in the library please following these directions.

1. The first message you should see will be this yellow balloon message box in the Notification Area (System Tray).

   

2. Click either the yellow balloon message or right-click this image of the computer with a red “X” in the Notification Area.

   

3. When you right click the computer image with a red “X” you will see the menu below. Choose “View Available Wireless Networks.”

   

4. In the “Choose a Wireless Network” window highlight John Jay College unsecured wireless network and then click the Connect button.

   

5. Then click the “Connect Anyway” button (you will then see the image in step # 2 below). Continue to step #2.

   

2. If you have previously logged into the John Jay College wireless network you will see the following in the Notification Area:

   

3. Open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Netscape, etc…) and you will then see the following window or something similar. Click “Yes”.



4. After clicking “Yes” you will then have to provide your email account name and password. Then click Log In.



**PLEASE NOTE**

WEP or WPA is not enabled on the John Jay wireless network.  After you log in you should be able to go to any web site of your choosing.
