| In 1997, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) established the Mapping and Analysis for Public Safety (MAPS) program, formerly known as the Crime Mapping Research Center, to promote research, evaluation, development, and dissemination of GIS technology for criminal justice research and practice. The site includes an excellent Briefing Book that explains much about crime mapping, links to full-text documents, free software to download, and links to law enforcement sites with crime maps. |
