Included here is a selection of useful sources providing background information on criminal and civil law, criminology, judicial systems, and police science. HV 9304 .W54This book focuses on ideological disputes in American penology, administrative and security problems in prison systems, and rehabilitative approaches in corrections. There are also entries describing federal and state prison systems and some noted individual prisons. Still useful although some infromation may be outdated. Encyclopedia of crime and justice. (4 vol.). (1983). New York: Macmillan. HV 6017 .E52This is the best and most comprehensive work of its kind; includes scholarly articles on all aspects of criminal justice. Useful as a background source for most topics in the field and as a reference guide to other materials due to its extensive bibliographies. Includes many references to major Supreme Court cases in criminal law and a useful glossary of criminal justice terms. Encyclopedia of gambling. (1990). New York: Facts on File. Entries include game rules, notorious gamblers, terms, and strategies, as well as a great deal of material on racketeering and organized crime influence. Encyclopedia of modern murder 1962 - 1982. noted murder cases listed by murderer. The index lists all the cases by
type of murder, and cross-references the murderers, police, detectives,

HV 7901 .E53This encyclopedia acts as a perfect introductory source for those unfamiliar with the literature of police science and is an excellent reference and bibliographic resource for those already involved in the field. essays on countries designated by the author as targets or suspected supporters
of terrorist activities.

HV 6017 .E55A comprehensive biographical and historical encyclopedia of criminal justice, law enforcement and criminology and crime from ancient times to the present providing fascinating browsing and very useful background information. The first 3 volumes are arranged alphabetically by name or historical event. Volume IV presents overviews of such topics as computer crime, forensic science, kidnapping, mob violence, sky jacking. Volume V is a dictionary of over 20,000 terms. The index to the set is in volume VI along with a bibliography. around the world. Detailed information is included on the history, structure,
organization, and strength of police forces, and the role of police in
each country's political and military structure. The last and most recent
text also covers corrections systems. Each book complements, and to some
extent overlaps, the others, but each includes unique features useful to
the researcher dealing with topics in comparative criminal justice systems.

Westport, CT: Greenwood Press. HV 7965 .T67 These works cover the entire range of federal and state agencies which have some police or investigative responsibility. Both handbooks outline very specific information about each unit departmental organization and areas of responsibility, historical data, and information regarding qualifications and training. The entries range from major overview articles on historical periods to thematic articles on subjects such as abortion, freedom of speech, and capital punishment. The set includes biographical sketches of U.S. Supreme Court justices and other important figures in constitutional history, and articles on each amendment. Details of landmark cases and origins of basic concepts such as due process, habeas corpus, equal protection are also provided. Encyclopedia of the American judicial system: Studies of the principal institutions and processes of law. (3 vol.). (1987). New York: Scribner's. KF 154 .E53This encyclopedia is organized in six sections: Legal History, Substantive law, Institutions and Personnel, Process and Behavior, Constitutional Law and Issues, and Methodology. Each section contains over a dozen extensive essays covering a particular aspect or concept in the field. Each topic is discussed within its historical context and concludes with a summary of current legal thinking. All articles end with a list of cited cases, a significant bibliography, and cross-references to other articles in the encyclopedia. KF 156 .G77Described as a comprehensive guide to the American legal system written in plain English, this set not only encompasses legal principles and concepts, but also contains accounts of famous trials, historical movements and events, and biographies of famous individuals. In addition, there are brief descriptions of legal organizations, information relating to federal regulatory agencies and departments, discussion of legal education and the legal profession, and hundreds of references to cases. A special feature is volume 11, which contains examples of standard legal forms, landmark documents an acts from American legal history. A cumulative index in Volume 12. The authors examine the development of these countries' legal systems and organization of their court systems, the personnel involved in the legal process, and public perception of the judicial system. KF 8742 .R45 Provides an account of the major issues confronted by the court, summaries of landmark cases, and careers of the justices. The book has 5 topical sections: The Role of the Supreme Court, Constitutional Power, Division of Power, Individual Rights, and Landmark Cases. Each of these volumes offers excellent short essays on an interesting collection of cases from both federal and state jurisdictions. In the first volume there are representative cases from all areas of criminal and civil law, governmental procedure, civil liberties and cases chosen for their significance in all aspects of American History. The second volume discusses cases on all aspects of sexuality including discrimination, abortion, sex crimes, privacy, homosexuality, obscenity, and family issues.
